DHYG 2385 - Clinical Dental Hygiene IIIContinued development of clinical techniques, skills, and current procedural practices of the dental hygienist with emphasis on self-evaluation. Emphasis on individualized dental hygiene care plans, reevaluation and maintenance of oral and periodontal health status, subsequent treatment needs, referral, risk assessment, expanded functions, dental hygiene case presentations and current advances in dental hygiene services. Clinical application of radiography, non-surgical periodontal therapy and advanced instrumentation techniques, power driven scalers and air polisher utilization, the administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia and local anesthesia. Students also participate in service learning rotations (up to 16 hours) at selected community sites. In addition, a weekly group discussion of selected topics will be conducted in a colloquium format. Course includes 240 clinical hours. Prerequisites: Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and successful completion of all previous Dental Hygiene (DHYG) coursework with a grade of “C” or better.
