Audio Engineering Certificate

Program Description

This program is designed to equip you with the fundamental knowledge and skills to work as an audio engineer.  It will prepare you to work in the fields of music recording and live sound for concerts and other public events. 

You will engage in hands-on tasks from the first day of class, learning how to capture or generate the best version of any audio sources, and to blend it with other sounds in a variety of applications.  You will learn the essential science of how sound waves work in nautre, and how they can be translated into electrical and digital signals. You will also learn the essential art of music, both in theory and practice, to know how sounds can be shaped to communicate emotions beyond what can be said with words. 

You will work in TCC’s dedicated recording studio - equipped with a control room, mulitple tracking rooms, a large collection of microphones, and the latest in analog-digital hybrid recording technology.  You will also work in the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education, learning to solve audio problems in real-time to present a great sounding experience to an audience.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program you will be able to:

  • Communicate about musical style, acoustics, sound production, timbre, equipment as it relates to sound engineering in a music recording and live sound setting.
  • Apply your understanding of recording equipment, music theory, aural theory, the practice of music to live concerts or recording sessions.
  • Analyze the properties of sounds waves and demonstrate understanding of how to translate this into electrical and digital signals.
  • Evaluate sound quality, balance, timbral quality in both recording or live setting and solve audio problems in real-time.
  • Design creative and logical solutions to audio problems in recording sessions and live concert settings using the latest analog-digital hybrid recording technology.
