Medical Laboratory Technician AAS Program Map

Program Description
This program prepares the student to perform diagnostic laboratory tests and related duties in a medical laboratory with the supervision of a medical technologist. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Upon successful completion of the program, students may sit for the National Registry sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
Many courses within this degree program may transfer to baccalaureate colleges and universities. Transfer credit varies among colleges. Students should consult the catalog of the specific college/university to which they plan to transfer to select courses that will meet requirements for both the associate and baccalaureate degree programs.
Admission to the Program
Program Application Instructions
- All prospective Medical Laboratory Technician students who have not been enrolled at TCC within the past year must complete an application for admission to the College and submit their high school transcript and previous college transcripts to the Metro Campus Student Completion Services office at 909 South Boston, Tulsa, OK 74119. Incomplete submissions will not be considered for admission into the Medical Laboratory Technician program. Admission to Tulsa Community College does not guarantee admission into the Medical Laboratory Technician program.
- Applications for admission to the MLT program must be completed online at tulsacc.edu/ApplyMLT by May 1st. For more information, contact the Department of Allied Health office at (918) 595-7002.
- Eligible applicants to be interviewed for consideration into the Medical Laboratory Technician program will be notified by email to their TCC email address. All interviewed applicants will be notified regarding their selection status.
- Students ARE NOT REQUIRED to have all prerequisites before applying to MLT program. Please apply at any time so we can sequence your courses correctly for earliest possible admission into the MLT program.
Program Admission Requirements
- Prerequisites: completion of (3 of 4) science general education and (2 of 4) non-science general education coursework (science courses are: BIOL1414, CHEM 1114, BIOL 1314, BIOL 2164) (non-science are: ENGL1113, ENGL1213, POLS 1113, HIST 1483 or 1493)
- Minimum required (Not all) Prerequisite courses must be completed by end of spring semester before admission to the summer start MLT program. (see above)
- Student may be enrolled in prerequisites during the Spring Semester when applying to the program.
- Any missing science general education must be completed by end of Fall semester of MLT year. Any missing non-science general education must be completed by end of Spring semester of MLT year.
- **Recommend students complete as many general education courses as possible before entering MLT in order to minimize excess semester hours.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.0*
- Minimum Science GPA of 2.5*
- *These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission into the MLT program.
- Applicants will be ranked for program admission according to the following criteria:
- Science GPA
- Interview with Program Director
- Overall GPA
- An extensive criminal background check, including but not limited to, a seven-year county of residence nationwide criminal history check, national sexual predator screening, Social Security check, and Medicare/Medicaid fraud screening is required by all clinical affiliates. All Health Science students participating in clinical are required to complete background checks, immunizations, CPR, physical exam and a drug screening test by the School of Health Science office deadline. Any positive findings may be subject to review by the clinical affiliates and could prevent the student from completing clinical requirements.
English Language Proficiency
An official iBT® TOEFL (internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language) test score or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Band score is required as proof of English proficiency for any International student for whom English is a second language who is applying to any Tulsa Community College health sciences program. Students who have graduated from a U.S. high school will not be required to take the iBT Toefl or IELTS tests. Your scores must be current within 2 years of the semester for which you are applying.
For health sciences students, the minimum sub-scores on the internet based TOEFL (iBT®) are 21 for Writing; 24 for Speaking; 20 for Reading; and 20 for Listening, with a total minimum score of 85.
For students choosing the IELTS test, acceptable scores include: 6.5 for Reading; 6.5 for listening; 7.5 for Speaking; and 6 for Writing, for a total IELTS Bans score of 6.5. These required minimum scores must be met for each of the four sub-tests on a single exam. A total score that does not meet the sub-score minimums does not meet the requirement. Exceptions to this policy may be considered on an individual basis.
Students must go to www.ets.org/toefl to find a TOEFL iBT testing site, register and pay for the test. Students may go to www.ielts.org/us to find an IELTS testing center and register and pay for the test. Both tests cost approximately $190. Students are highly encouraged to take practice tests to prepare for these important tests. Your official scores, including ALL Sub-scores, must be sent directly to the TCC Registrar’s Office.

AAS in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Introduction
This degree map provides the semester-by-semester course sequencing a full-time student will follow to complete this degree. To earn an Associate in Applied Science degree you must achieve a grade point average of 2.0 as a minimum on all coursework required for the degree. Note the Milestones below each semester. Milestones are reminders of actions you should take during that semester to help keep you on track for degree completion. **Please not that TCC’s MLT program is considered a 1+1 program. The first year is the prerequisite courses which are designed to be completed in one year on a full-time basis. However students can complete these on a part-time basis taking 2-3 classes a semester until they are complete. The 2nd year (MLT year) is considered full-time. When applying for the MLT you are applying for acceptance into the 2nd year (MLT Year) and then it’s 13 months until completion and graduation. It is highly recommended that once you are interested in MLT: Contact the MLT Program Director, Inform your assigned academic adviser, apply to the MLT Program. Prerequisite Courses (List)

However students can take 1 science course and 2 general non-science education courses while in the program. This will increase course workload during the MLT program. **Very Important: You are not required to be complete with Prerequisite courses before you can apply. Please Apply as soon as you interested and we can help you determine which year you will be eligible. Prior or during the student’s enrolling in the prerequisite courses, students are encouraged to apply to the MLT program and meet with the MLT program director. You should note that only courses completed with a ‘C’ or better will be considered acceptable. The prerequisite courses are mapped out to be taken full-time. See below: First Semester Prerequisite and Second Semester Prerequisite. However the prerequisite courses may be taken on a part-time basis. In this case the adviser will map the student to the closest MLT application year. Total Credit Hours: 28

** Students that have taken Prerequisite courses at an institution other then TCC will need to do the following: 1. Submit an Official Transcript to TCC for evaluation 2. Submit an Unofficial Transcript (via e-mail) to the MLT Program Director for Evaluation of Prerequisite coursework.
Co-Requisite Courses (List)
These courses can be taken as either prerequisites or taken within the MLT program. It is recommended that you take these prior to the MLT program if time permits to limit your course load in the program. MLT students that still need phlebotomy will have slots reserved for Summer and Fall of the MLT year. See below in the MLT summer semester for information. **MDLT 1203 and 1222 may be waived with previous phlebotomy coursework and/or phlebotomy work experience. **MDLT 1222 may be waived without previous coursework or experience. Please discuss with the Program Director to see if course can be waived. MDLT 1203 and 1222 must be taken in the same semester. MDLT 2111 can be taken in any semester. All 3 courses MDLT 1203, 1222, 2111 must be successfully completed if the student wishes to obtain the Phlebotomy Certificate from TCC. The Phlebotomy Certificate is not required for admission into the MLT Program. For the purpose of this Map. Phlebotomy Courses will be sequenced in the Summer Semester. First Semester- Prerequisite Courses (Fall)
This is the recommended Degree Map for those wanting to complete Prerequisites in One year. It’s best to make an appointment with the MLT Program Director or an Health Science Adviser to help map a plan of study. **It is highly recommended that students take both BIOL 1224 and CHEM 1114 as soon as possible as they are required before you can take BIOL 2164. Total Credit Hours: 14
A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in all BIOL and CHEM courses to be considered for the MLT Program. Second Semester- Prerequisitie Courses (Spring)
This is the recommended Degree Map for those wanting to complete Prerequisites in One year. It’s best to make an appointment with the MLT Program Director or an Health Science Adviser to help map a plan of study. Students wanting to enter the workforce as a phlebotomist while in MLT program should consider substituting ENGL 1213 and POLS 1113 for the Phlebotomy Certificate program courses. Students can then take ENGL 1213 and POLS 1113 in the MLT program. Total Credit Hours:14
A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in all BIOL and CHEM courses to be considered for the MLT Program. Milestones

- Check the academic calendar for important dates and deadlines impacting classes and financial aid.
- To maintain financial aid eligibility, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.70 during the first 30 credit hours attempted and complete 67% of the courses attempted. Review your Financial Aid Dashboard or visit the Financial Aid Office to determine your financial aid status.
- Meet with an academic adviser before enrolling for the next semester.
- Visit Career Services by your 20th credit hour to explore career opportunities associated with this degree.
Specialized Course Requirements Credit Hours: 36-41
Once admitted to the MLT program these are MLT specific courses. Hours may slightly vary depending on students phlebotomy status. Medical Laboratory (MLT) Courses - Summer Semester (Admitted to the MLT Program).
Once admitted into the MLT program, depending on what the student still needs the Summer semester is highly variable. MDLT 2222 is a required 100% Online course during the summer after MLT acceptance. The others will be variable based on needs. Maximum of 9 hours can be taken over the summer. Students wanting to take more than 9 hours in a Summer semester will have to have academic adviser approval. Students wishing to pursue Phlebotomy Certificate Program will need to Complete all risk management requirements. These must be completed before a student will be given permission into Phlebotomy courses. (Immunizations (see list on website), AHA CPR, TB Testing, physical), including clearance on a national background check and negative drug screen. Requirements are the same for MLT. Priority will be MDLT 2222 and any missing Science Course. Phlebotomy Can be taken in the following Fall if needed. - MDLT 2222 - Clinical Immunology and Serology
MDLT 2222 is required to be taken during Summer semester after admission to MLT. The other courses listed are examples of courses that can be taken if needed, this will HIGHLY vary by student. - MDLT 1203 - Phlebotomy
Course can be waived for MLT students who have phlebotomy experience or have previously taken phlebotomy courses elsewhere. Request for waiver must be submitted to Program Director. - MDLT 1222 - Phlebotomy Clinical
Course may be waived for MLT students who have phlebotomy experience, are working as a phlebotomist, or can show proof of competency. Students who do not have phlebotomy experience may still be able to waive this course. See Program Director for details. - BIOL or Gen Ed - -Any Missing Science course or non-science general education course. - -3-4 hours.
- MDLT 2111 - Professionalism and Communication in Healthcare
If MLT student is pursuing the phlebotomy certificate then MDLT 2111 must be taken with MDLT 1203 and MDLT 1222. If MLT Student is not pursing phlebotomy certificate, MDLT 2111 can be taken in the MLT Program.
Total Credit Hours: 2-9 (Highly Variable Depending on what student needs)
A grade of ‘C’ or better is required on all MDLT courses to continue in the program. A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in all BIOL and CHEM courses to be considered for the MLT Program.

- Complete all risk management requirements. These must be completed before a student will be given permission into Fall MLT courses. (Immunizations (see list), AHA CPR, TB Testing, Physical), including clearance on a national background check and negative drug screen. **If completed for Phlebtomy Program, most items will carry over.
- Meet with an academic adviser before enrolling and to file for graduation if completing the Phlebotomy Certificate. Graduation checks are often done as a group in class prior to clinicals.
Medical Laboratory (MLT) Courses - Fall Semester
Courses are often scheduled using different parts of term. Example: August Intersession, first 4 week course, first 8 week course as well as 16 week courses. This is to stagger the course completion dates as to not overwhelm the student at the end of the semester. Total Credit Hours: 14
A grade of ‘C’ or better is required on all MDLT courses to continue in the program. Milestones
- Check academic calendar for important dates and deadlines impacting classes and financial aid.
- To maintain financial aid eligibility, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 if 31 or more hours have been attempted. See a financial aid counselor to determine your financial aid status if on financial aid.
- Complete all risk management requirements in preparation for the clinical setting (CPR, vaccinations, flu shot, TB test, etc.), including clearance on a national background check and negative drug screen. **If completed during phlebotomy most items will carry over to MLT. Permissions to enroll in Fall MLT will not be given unless risk management is complete.
- Meet with the MLT Program Director for a program progress review
- Grade of “C” or better is required to continue in the MLT program. There is no remediation for MLT courses, grades below a “C” will result in dismissal from the program.
Medical Laboratory (MLT) Courses - Spring Semester
Courses are often scheduled using different parts of term. Example: first 12 week courses, last 4 week course as well as16 week courses. This is to stagger the course completion dates as to not overwhelm the student at the end of the semester. Total Credit Hours: 13
A grade of ‘C’ or better is required on all MDLT courses to continue in the program. Milestones

- To maintain financial aid eligibility, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 if 31 or more hours have been attempted and complete 67% of the courses attempted. Review your Financial Aid Dashboard or visit the Financial Aid Office to determine your financial aid status.
- Meet with an academic adviser to file for a graduation check. Graduation checks are often done as a group during class prior to beginning of clinical rotation.
- Meet with the MLT Program Director for a program progress review

Medical Laboratory (MLT) Courses- Summer Semester (Final Semester)
Summer MLT semester only consists of clinical rotations performed as either Simulation at TCC or mostly at an external clinical site (hospitals). May Intersession will be required. Total Credit Hours: 6
