World Languages Certificate, Spanish Option Program Map


If you follow this degree map, you can complete this certificate in four (4) semesters. See an academic advisor for a customized degree map that works for you. To earn a Certificate of Achievement in this field of study, you must achieve a minimum 2.0 (‘C’) grade point average on the courses listed below. Note the Milestones below each semester. Milestones are reminders of actions you should take during that semester to help keep you on track for certificate completion.

Students with advanced language experience may test out of the following courses by achieving a score of 50 or higher on the CLEP exam: SPAN 1103 Elementary Spanish I, SPAN 1213 Elementary Spanish II and SPAN 2113 - Intermediate Spanish I. Students may also test out of SPAN 2143 Latin American Civilization and Culture and SPAN 2513 Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Conversation by achieving a score of 63 or higher on the CLEP exam.

SPAN 1001 Spanish Communication I Prerequisite:Prerequisite: SPAN 1103 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval. May be taken with SPAN 1103

SPAN 1031 Spanish Pronunciation . Prerequisite: SPAN 1103 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval.May be taken with SPAN 1103

  • Form a study group, join a student organization, or volunteer at a community service site.
  • Visit the writing, math and science, or technology learning centers for free individual tutoring support services.

SPAN 1213  Elementary Spanish II prerequisite: SPAN 1103 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval.

SPAN 1201 Spanish for Communication II  prerequisite:  SPAN 1103 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval. Students should be enrolled or have completed SPAN 1213 when enrolling in SPAN 1201.

SPAN 2113 Spanish Intermediate 1. Prerequisite: SPAN 1213 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval. This course may be taken concurrently with SPAN 2143 Latin American Civilization and Culture.
SPAN 2143 Latin American Civilization and Culture. Prerequisite: SPAN 2113 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval.

SPAN 2513 Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Conversation  prerequisite: SPAN 2113 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval

SPAN 2523 Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition  prerequisite: SPAN 2113 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval

SPAN 2413 Translating Spanish to English. Prerequisite: SPAN 2143 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval

SPAN 2443 Interpreting Spanish to English. Prerequisite: SPAN 2143 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval

SPAN 2453 Interpreting English to Spanish. Prerequisite : SPAN 2143 with a grade of “C” or better or instructor approval

SPAN 2663 Spanish Service Learning. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

It is highly recommended to complete either SPAN 2523 or SPAN 2663 as part of the Spanish certificate.

**For students considering an Interpreting Certificate, the following Spanish Controlled Electives are recommended:

SPAN 2443 Interpreting Spanish to English and SPAN 2453 Interpreting English to Spanish

**For students considering a Translating Certificate, the following Spanish Controlled Electives are recommended:

SPAN 2523, Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition; SPAN 2413, Translating Spanish to English; SPAN 2443, Translating English to Spanish.
