Program Description

This program is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to work as an audio engineer and a music producer.  It will prepare you to work in the fields of music recording, songwriting and composition, audio for visual media, and live sound for concerts and other public events.

In the first half of the program, you will complete an Audio Engineering Certificate. In this certificate program you will engage in hands-on tasks, learning how to capture or generate the best version of an audio source, and how to blend it with other sounds in a variety of applications.  You will learn the essential science of how sound waves work in nature, how they are perceived by the ear, and how they can be translated into electrical and digital signals. You will also learn the essential art of music, both in practice and in theory. You will have opportunities to train your ears, to learn how to read music notation, and to write your own songs. You will also produce sound for visual media, including location recording, dialogue replacement, and foley. You will also learn about the music business, collaborating with your classmates to plan, promote, and produce multiple live music events.

In the second half of the program you will expand your opportunities in every direction. You will produce recordings and concerts at a larger scale. You will expand your songwriting into arranging for a variety of instruments. You will develop your individual performance skills on an instrument and your collaboration skills with other musicians in an ensemble. You will compose original scores for scenes from films and video games.

All the while, you will be learning how to navigate multiple audio software and hardware platforms. You will work in TCC’s dedicated recording studio - equipped with a control room, multiple tracking rooms, a large collection of microphones, and the latest in analog-digital hybrid recording technology.  You will also work in the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education, learning to solve audio problems in real-time to present a great sounding experience to an audience. You will map out your career in the audio and music industries, and make a plan to forge a pathway as a freelancer, an employee, or an entrepreneur.
