World Languages Certificate, Spanish Language Services Certificate Program Map

If you follow this degree map, you can complete this certificate in four (4) semesters. See an academic advisor for a customized degree map that works for you. To earn a Certificate of Achievement in this field of study, you must achieve a minimum 2.0 (‘C’) grade point average on the courses listed below.
Note the Milestones below each semester. Milestones are reminders of actions you should take during that semester to help keep you on track for certificate completion
Students with prior Spanish experience are encouraged to ask their advisor about the CLEP or departmental placement exam to determine eligibility for credit and placement into a higher-level course.

Milestones
- Complete Elementary Spanish I with a ‘C’ or better or have instructor approval to progress to the next SPAN course.
- Connect with the World Languages Lab to explore tutoring services and receive individualized support in-person or online.
- Form a study group, in addition to accessing the services provided by the World Languages Lab, for additional support and practice.
- Ask your professors for tips on how to navigate and progress through your language-learning journey more efficiently.
- Meet with an academic advisor before enrolling for the next semester.
- Check the academic calendar for important dates and deadlines impacting classes and financial aid.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.70 during the first 30 credit hours attempted and complete 67% of the courses attempted to maintain financial aid eligibility. Review your Financial Aid Dashboard or visit the Financial Aid Office to determine your financial aid status.

- Meet with an academic advisor before enrolling for the next semester. The next course in sequence is Intermediate Spanish I, which can also be taken concurrently with Latin American Civilization and Culture.

- Explore volunteer opportunities at a community service site, in addition to accessing the services provided by the World Languages Lab, for additional support and practice.

- If you successfully completed Spanish 1103, 1213 and 2113 with a C or better or took the CLEP/Departmental Exam – Congratulations! You earned a Microcredential Badge. With this badge, you demonstrate the ability to communicate in Spanish at an elementary to early intermediate level. Share your badge with your employer, add it to your resume and/or post it on Linkedin.
- Meet with an academic advisor before enrolling for the next semester. During this meeting: 1) consider which specialized pathway your are interested in and ask about the Translating and/or Interpreting Microcredential(s) and 2) discuss your eligibility to file for graduation.
- If pursuing the Translating Microcredential option, the following courses are suggested and must be taken concurrently: SPAN 2413 - Translating Spanish to English and SPAN 2543 - Translating English to Spanish
- If pursuing the Interpreting Microcredential option, the following courses are suggested and must be taken concurrently: SPAN 2443 - Interpreting Spanish to English and SPAN 2453 - Interpreting English to Spanish.
- Visit Career Services to build your resume if you are entering the workforce after graduation.
